GPhone rumors strong as ever as Google courts mobile operators

NEW YORK - Rumors of a Google phone or 'GPhone' continue to be stoked time and again, so much so that they have become a part of the daily grind for technology news buffs. However this time it is the venerable Wall Street Journal, which has stoked these rumors saying that Google is spending hundreds of millions of dollars pursuing mobile operators in the US as well as in Europe. The WSJ report cited Anian, a Reuters subsidiary which had said that that last month Google had held hectic parleys with High Tech Computer Corp of Taiwan in order to finalize a deal for launching a Linux-based mobile phone. The company said that such a launch was expected in the first four months of 2008.Wall Street Journal also reported that Google has also talked with AT&T Inc and Verizon Wireless asking them to sell phones equipped with Google services. On the other hand the Anian report says that Google's US partner is likely to be T-Mobile and Orange would distribute the phones elsewhere. While Verizon and T-mobile did not comment, Mark Siegel, an AT&T spokesman said, "We talk to a lot of different companies and we're not going to comment on our discussions with any of them."Google itself has been quite mum on the whole issue, but in an e-mailed statement it gave a vague explanation saying that it is "partnering with carriers, manufacturers, and content providers around the world." The Wall Street Journal said that Google had developed certain prototypes of the GPhone and had also talked with LG Electronics regarding the technical specifications.Rumors of the GPhone gained strength because Google took an active interest in the FCC auction of the 700 MHz spectrum.Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said the company has set aside $4.6 billion to participate in the auction.
